IBS or irritable bowel movement is a condition wherein you feel your stomach cramp up. Once you start to feel this, you will start looking for a bathroom. Basically, this condition would require you to stay at home and probably near the bathroom. So how will you know if you have IBS? What are the IBS symptoms and its causes? Find out.

Symptoms of IBS

Based on the mentioned definition of IBS, you should be expecting stomach ache as the main symptom of this condition. But not all stomach aches lead to IBS. In fact, a simple tummy ache can mean tons of other diseases. Which is why you have to take note the following signs of IBS:


Bloating is when you feel an abdominal discomfort. The gas feeling in your stomach can even become severe as time goes by. In worst cases, you might end up having a swollen abdomen.


Anyone can have constipation. It means that you do not release all your stools regularly or you cannot empty your bowel. Also, when you have constipation, your stool tends to be lumpy and hard. It can occur for a long time or a short time, depending on your condition.


With this condition, you can expect to have watery and loose stools. Also, you will release bowel at least three times a day or more. Just like constipation, diarrhea can happen for a short or long time. The shortest would be for one or two days. Once it exceeds that duration, the condition that you have might be a serious already.

Difficulty in sleeping and fatigue

Research shows that IBS can be related to having difficulty in sleeping and excessive fatigue. There are even studies that claim that IBS can also be related to insomnia.

Depression and anxiety

Other than insomnia, IBS can be connected to depression and anxiety. However, there is no actual research yet on how these two are related. Can depression and anxiety happen when you already have IBS or vice versa? For now, one thing is for sure: anxiety reduction therapy can eliminate or reduce your IBS symptoms.

Other possible symptoms that might occur are clear or white mucus found in the stool or uncontrollable bowel movements.

However, since the abovementioned conditions can result in other more ailments, it is best to check thoroughly if you do have IBS. How?

The doctor will know that you have IBS when he or she was able to set out any of these:

  • Stool looks different
  • There is a change when the stool is release
  • Pain and suffering in your stomach is removed after a bowel movement

According to the guidelines for IBS, you need to experience all three to be diagnosed with IBS.

Others will check your bowel movements for three to six months. Take note that weight loss, fever, and blood in your stool cannot be considered symptoms of IBS. But, if you do have these symptoms, it is best to go to your doctor right away.

3 Types of IBS

Once you are diagnosed with IBS, you should now proceed to know which type of condition you have. This is because there are actually three types of IBS:

1. IBS with diarrhea

This type of IBS can give you discomfort with stomach pain. You will also experience abnormal bowel movements, watery stools, and urgency to release your bowels.

2. IBS with constipation

Just like the first type of IBS, the second type of IBS can give you tummy ache and discomfort. But with the addition of hard stool, irregular bowel movement, and bloating.

3. IBS with diarrhea and constipation

This type is the hardest as constipation and diarrhea are interchanged during this time. So you tend to feel discomfort more.

IBS Triggers

Just like any other condition, IBS has its own set of triggers as well. Knowing these triggers can help you avoid them.

1. Diet

When you are in a diet, you tend to avoid a lot of food. But did you know that dieting also increases your chances of having IBS? How?

There is a lot of food that can upset your stomach. Some of these are:

  • Dairy products, particularly cheese
  • Alcohol, carbonated drinks, and coffee
  • Processed foods, especially cookies and chips
  • Cereals and bread that are made of refined grains

In this case, make sure that you have a better diet choice. You can boost the amount of your fiber intake 2 to 3 grams every day. You should also focus on eating foods that have a high sugar substitute like prune juice and plums. Lastly, drink loads of water.

2. Stress

Surprisingly, stress can get you IBS. In fact, stress can come from a lot of factors like work, money, and other problems. Although it is impossible to avoid stress, you can lower your tendencies to increase it further. What you can do is keep healthy habits by having a well-balanced diet. You can also do things that you like. For example, going to the gym or listening to music.

In worse cases, you can do behavioral therapy. This will help you control your stress levels through relaxation and other therapies. If you want, you can also vent out your feelings to your family or close friends. Sometimes it is best to let out those feelings before they burst.
